DellaJane Hand Dyes - 2005 Journal Quilt Gallery

The Journal Quilt Project was started several years ago by Karey Bresenhan as challenge to QuiltArt members. A selection of each participant's journal quilts are unveiled at International Quilt Festival in Houston each fall.

My 2005 Journal Quilts were inspired by the movie "Because of Winn-Dixie". In the story, a young girl uses her dog, Winn-Dixie, to convince her father to share 10 things about the girl's absent mother. His list evoked the essense of the mother without giving a physical description. I wanted to do the same thing - to describe ME without the laundry list of characteristics.

I listed 12 things about myself. Each month, I chose one item from my list that seemed appropriate for that month. For example, "Hot, Not Cold", was done in February. "I love baseball" was my quilt for April, when the baseball season begins. Each month, I also made a postcard which fit my Journal Quilt theme. Sometimes the postcards were experiments for the journal quilt, sometimes a variation of the JQ theme. Most of the postcards were sent to members of the Omaha Postcard Exchange. These are my 2005 Journal Quilts and postcards. My apologies for the missing pictures - sometimes my mailing deadline for the postcard got in the way of taking a picture of it!

2005 Journal Quilts
January - I like to sit in the back row.
February - I'd rather be hot than cold.
March - I prefer sweet to salty.
April - Baseball!
May - Pink & Black is my favorite color combination.
June - More Is Better.
JULY - The Southwest feels like "home" to me.
August - I grow flowers.
September - I make lists.
October - I'm a morning person.
November - Still To Come!
December - I'm A Collector
