There are 48 white muslin blocks set on point, 6 across, 8 down. Each block has a state flower and name embroidered in the block. There is no discernible pattern for arrangement of the state blocks. Alternate blocks are dark blue cotton, with half-square triangles used on sides of the quilt. Blocks are approximately 8" square. The top is machine pieced. The borders are part of the backing folded to the front. The border is approximately 3" wide.
The States of Hawaii & Alaska are not included. This indicates use of a pre-1948 patterns &/or pre-1948 age of quilt. The backing is white muslin. It is pieced, with a strip of blue cotton about 3.5" wide running the length of the quilt from top to bottom. This creates a small blue square in the top and bottom borders of the quilt. The batting is a thin, coarse, white fabric. The quilt is tied at the corners of every block with a heavy blue cotton embroidery thread which matches the blue fabric. The knots & strings are on the top of the quilt. DAMAGE ASSESSMENT: There are 7 embroidered blocks which are torn and/or destroyed. There are 5 blue blocks which are torn and/or destroyed. Another half square edging triangle on the lower left side has a small hole, about .5" diameter. Minimal fading has occurred on the blue cotton. |
